How Many Black Flame Candles Were Made In Hocus Pocus

Gilbert is able to bring the Sanderson Sisters back to life in Hocus Pocus 2 with another Black Flame Candle – but how many more are left?

WARNING! This post contains SPOILERS for Hocus Pocus 2!The Black Flame Candles are notably used to conjure the Sanderson Sisters on Halloween night, with Hocus Pocus 2 revealing that several have been made. The original Black Flame Candle was seemingly made by the Sanderson Sister witches using dark magic, which would eventually resurrect them for one night when lit by a virgin during a full moon. Max Dennison’s skepticism led him to mistakenly bring the sisters back to life in Hocus Pocus (1993), while Becca and Izzy were tricked by Gilbert into lighting the Black Flame Candle in Hocus Pocus 2.

Hocus Pocus indicated that there was only one Black Flame Candle in existence, but the sequel revealed that Gilbert had made another in his attempt to bring back the Sanderson Sisters. Once the second Black Flame Candle went out, it appeared that there would be no more candles available to resurrect Winnie, Mary, and Sarah. However, Hocus Pocus 2’s end-credits scene confirmed that Gilbert made a second Black Flame Candle, likely in case the first one didn’t work. This means that at least three Black Flame Candles have been made in Hocus Pocus, but it’s possible there are more that other Salem residents have secretly created.

How Gilbert Made New Black Flame Candles In Hocus Pocus 2

Creating the Black Flame Candle requires dark magic, so it’s unclear exactly how the non-magical Gilbert was able to make it before Hocus Pocus 2. However, Book had been helping Gilbert in his efforts to bring back the Sanderson Sisters ever since that fateful night in 1993, so it likely found a way to make the candle effective without a spell. Book also showed Gilbert the ingredients for the Black Flame Candle, which means Gilbert either had to do some grave-robbing or murder someone, as the candle is made from the fat of a hanged man. Considering Gilbert didn’t have many reservations about digging up Billy Butcherson in Hocus Pocus 2, it seems he was already experienced in using a shovel in Salem’s cemetery.

What Gilbert’s Second Black Flame Candle Means For Hocus Pocus 3

The third official Black Flame Candle in Hocus Pocus 2’s end-credits scene perfectly sets up the Sanderson Sisters’ return in Hocus Pocus 3. Although Gilbert had just promised in Hocus Pocus 2’s ending that there would be no more Black Flame Candles, he seemingly forgot about the extra one he had back at the magic shop. Even if Gilbert doesn’t find more teens to light the candle, there’s always the chance that an unsuspecting virgin will light it on Halloween night and accidentally bring back the witches. In fact, there could be a twist in which Becca and Izzy light Gilbert’s second candle to purposefully conjure Winnie, Mary, and Sarah again.

Although Hocus Pocus 2's ending gave the Sanderson Sisters a bittersweet conclusion, it’s highly likely that they’ll be resurrected once more for Hocus Pocus 3. The sequel’s final scene saw the bird-form Witch Mother flying behind Becca, Izzy, and Cassie, suggesting she may try to influence Salem’s new coven or become a major villain in Hocus Pocus 3. The newly-reformed Sanderson Sisters could then turn out to be anti-heroes in another sequel if they’re brought back to life to help Becca, Izzy, and Cassie take down Hannah Waddingham’s Witch Mother. Salem’s children may have been saved in Hocus Pocus 2, but more trouble inevitably lies ahead.
